Wingham Primary School

It’s all about the children

Term 3

This term our topic is Pirates and we are thinking about the question: Is a pirate’s life for me? So far, we are really enjoying learning all about Pirates and have learned lots of interesting facts about how they lived. We studied the famous pirates, Anne Bonny and Blackbeard and wrote biographies about them. We also enjoyed a visit from a local author.

In maths, we have been continuing to learn our numbers to 20, particularly focusing on addition and subtraction. We have been learning about different ways to represent fact families using lots of practical equipment. We have just started learning numbers to 50 and have been focusing on splitting 2 digit numbers into tens and units.

We had a fantastic science week where we did lots of exciting things. We started the week off with a Rainbow Bubbles workshop, where we learned how to make bubbles. Throughout the week we did various experiments in class, including growing rainbows and making a lava lamp. The highlight of the week was a biscuit dunking challenge, which the whole school took part in.

As part of RSPB Birdwatch month, we made some simple bird feeders by coating a toilet roll tube in peanut butter and coating it in bird seed. We then went outside and hung them on branches for the birds to enjoy. In forest school, we made some birds nests using natural materials that we collected.

In art, we have been studying the work of Matisse. We made some ‘Under the Sea’ pictures in his style using silhouettes of sea creatures. In PE, we have enjoyed participating in Kurling and dance linked to the seaside.
