Wingham Primary School

Learning together, we grow kind hearts and healthy minds

Term 6

Year 1 have continued to enjoy our topic ‘Does Farming Matter?’ and have had a fantastic final term in Year One. We have spent lots of time outside enjoying the beautiful sunshine and warmer weather.

In English, we have been focusing on the story of Handa’s Surprise and Handa’s Hen. We have enjoyed listening to these stories and doing lots of descriptive writing. We also wrote a set of instructions about how to make bread which was linked to our DT topic of making bread. We had an exciting lesson tasting different types of bread and following on from this we made some of our own bread.

In maths, we began the term by focusing on place value on numbers to 100. We then covered the topics of money and time.  We enjoyed lots of practical lessons learning about the value of different coins and notes. During our time topic, we practised the days of the week, months of the year and learned how to tell the time to the hour.

In Science, we have continued learning about plants and growing things. We planted a sunflower and some cress. We learned what a plant needs to thrive and enjoyed looking for wildflowers in the school grounds. During forest school, we collected natural materials and put them in a basket just like in the story of Handa’s Surprise.

In PE, we have continued practising for Sport’s Day. We have enjoyed doing a variety of activities including: tug of war, jumping, throwing and the egg and spoon race.

In Computing, we had great fun editing photos of ourselves using a special program called LunaPic. We also used the computers to play some maths games to help us learn our numbers to one hundred and money.
